Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My job is a mechanical electrical engineer so this could be fixing a motor impeller or wiring in a panel it can change from day to day but there is a lot of maintenance work just to keep everything running smoothly and this is key to getting water out the gate everyday.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy this a lot as everyday is different as there are so many different working components making sure that we are getting water out something goes wrong it’s likely as someone who’s has only been there for a couple years might not of seen before and that’s why mentors are great as they will have seen it before and can help you understand for the next time

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
As I started when I was 16 I came straight out of school into something I knew I wanted to do most if not all of the stuff I have learnt. Like working on a milling machine and a lathe welding wiring in motors panels there are many different things you can do.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I seem to find that certain things are very well dealt with and some not so much but for a big company they do well to get to things as quick as they can as much as I might not agree with somethings they do I trust they know what they are doing.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
If I need soemthing like tools or training or parts to do a job then the company is very good and will provide these things the parts and tools usually next day but training could take a while which is a shame as then someone else will have done the job you need to do by the time you have had the training
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The training provider is great they are always helping if something goes wrong or if you don’t understand something. The exams we have done so far I believe there are only a couple apprentices have struggled but in an over view they have been great and always quick to respond
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
All of the stuff we are learning from our training provider is very relevant as we just did a unit on health and safety and this is one of the most important things in our job as there are so many different things to look out for when doing a job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
I think there are some that we can get involved in but not loads I’m not sure why they might just not want to do them and that’s fair enough but there could be a lot more chance for people to do things like running or swimming events in and around reservoirs

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Thames Water to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Thames water overall can be a very good company to work for depending on your job role as I believe that some are decent and some can be worse only from people I have spoken to in the past but I guess it’s your personal preference but I do believe that it is a good company to work for
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
Be confident and make sure that what you say you can do you can really do just as I have come across some people who don’t seem to be super confident either because they don’t know how to do certain things or they are worried they got it wrong if you’re applying for an apprenticeship make sure you put everything on there if you like working with bikes or cars or anything mechanical it will go a long way
