Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
It depends on the placement and year of the apprentice but it consists of following the same working day as your mentor and gaining new skills and knowledge of the placement and jobs that is carried out. This can then be used to carry out and complete one file work.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I find the program rather enjoyable and a great choice for anyone wanting to move into the engineering career, especially within the marine sector. However, I wish that some placement related to the onefile work more so write up and questions could be completed sooner. All in all, it is a great apprentice to learn new skills in and been very interesting.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have managed to learn new skills and also have been able to develop skills that I previously had, such as machining with lathes and mills. New skills would be working in pumps and valves but also the Diesel engines and the systems that are placed on board ship last year.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
It can be very well organised sometimes however there are some cases where there has been miscommunication between members leading to confusion and the organisation failing. The structure of the programme has maintain a good position and can easily be followed it would just be better if the organisation was up to the same level.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Rather often my employer is there when I need them, be it for work enquiries or just one file needs. I can message or ring them when needed. However, due to Covid I have not been able to see them face to face but I know once they’re back in work I will be able to talk face to face when I need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
When working towards my qualification there has been a reasonable amount of support from those training me. Such as giving me specific jobs that they know would help me cover my one file so I can use them for writes up. They also try to answer any question I ask in order to help me understand.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Personally, I find that my qualification is helping me perform better in my roles because I am learning in both positions. If I don’t understand the work from my role it is often explained through my qualification and training provider. I find using my qualification information helps supports me through my role in work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
From what I am aware of I don’t think so. We do however have stem events which either chosen or volunteered people have a chance to go to work events and present themselves as Babcock personnel, to talk to others who are interested in stem or just Babcock in general.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Babcock International Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
If they are looking into going into engineering, especially the marine sector, then it is a great apprenticeship and opportunity as it allows you to learn whilst earning money. It also has a good way of introducing people into the working world if they have come straight from school and haven’t even had a job yet.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?
Some tips and advice I would give would be to ensure that they want the Babcock apprenticeship and know what entails of it. Also to understand some basic engineering skills or knowledge to help them through the first year and show through the application process that they’re the person Babcock wants.
