Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Assessment and treatment of adult and paediatric attendances to the Emergency Department, leading and oversight of Emergency Department shopfloor, providing supervision to junior clinicians. Teaching and educational supervision of Emergency Medicine staff, leading quality improvement projects, clinical governance and patient safety, audit and morbidity and mortality reviews. Medical student training and appraisal of substantive staff.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Time out to concentrate on developing leadership skills, away from the constant interruption in the workplace, to have some headspace to think, reflecting on experiences and through the programme sense-making and consideration of how things might have been done differently. Connecting with others from different industries and comparing experiences in the workplace

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Leadership styles, emotional intelligence including psychometric testing, development of self-reflection and critical reflective skills, critical writing, leadership theory and how that relates to practice, engagement and motivation theory and practice, human resource management, operations management, strategic and tactical management, action planning, time management skills, support from executive coaching and development of coaching skills

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Very well organised. The course makes use of Moodle as the primary tutor; easy to access information 24/7 and course tutors make themselves readily available for advice. Study skills support and library/knowledge team have been a tremendous source of support and reply promptly for support on assignment work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I have a manager and mentor who have been very supportive in finding learning opportunities or information that I require to support coursework. It has been difficult on occasion to juggle work with coursework, and I have often needed to take annual leave to get some time off to study/complete assignment work. However, I have had full support to attend webinars/Uni days
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My manager and mentor have been very supportive in finding learning opportunities or information that I require to support coursework. I have often needed to take annual leave to get some time off to study/complete assignment work. However, I have had full support to attend webinars and Uni days
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification is already paying dividends to perform better in my role as there is so much from the theory to apply to real life experiences and to learn from reflection. I have also benefitted within the course from the support of an executive business coach, when I have been able to discuss issues in the workplace
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it had been challenging to be involved in any extracurricular activities; in fact I have never met any of my colleagues as so far everything has been delivered online. We do however have a supportive course WhatsApp group and plan to meet in early June

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
A wide variety of opportunities to apply theory to experience in the workplace, a wide diversity of staff, a large and complex organisation which provides a rich source of learning opportunities and for others in the workplace to share their wisdom and learn from their styles of leadership. Fast-paced change.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
The NHS was the third largest employer in the world; it is a rich source of experience and opportunity for leadership development. It is a fast-changing environment. Due to the size of the organisation there are many layers of bureaucracy which are at times difficult to navigate as an emerging leader
