Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Each day I work amongst a team of mangers, supervisors and assistants to perform audits for a range of clients. I review financial information, perform data analysis on that information and communicate with clients to obtain information. As part of my role I am also in charge of a team which varies in size based on the client. It is my responsibility to report back to management.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my training programme a moderate amount. The exams are tasking and the work we are given is difficult, although we are guided through how to complete it. The job role requires a fair amount of overtime to be worked and there is a lot of pressure on staff to get jobs completed within a given time frame.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
During my apprenticeship I have learnt a number of new skills. I have developed my communication skills by talking frequently amongst my team and also having constant communication with clients. I have also developed my project management skills as I must manage my own time to complete tasks and also manage the time of assistants on jobs.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well organised. All training is done through BPP. We have an exam training manager who organises all college courses and jobs fit in around that. We are given the appropriate amount of time to study for exams and in all cases, exams come first. We are also allocated time to complete other elements of our apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I receive a good amount of support from my employer. I have a line manager and an exam training manager that I can contact at any time to put across my worries. In most cases, any concerns that I have are dealt with swiftly, however in a number of cases these are short term solutions and issues can resurface- mainly in relation to workload.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
BPP provide a lot of support whilst working towards the qualification. You get frequent communication from staff throughout your college and study time. You are also able to contact your tutor at any time during studying. There is also an online hub with helpful links and activities to help you in your studies.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I don't think that my qualification helps me perform significantly better in my role. In most cases I have encountered situations we are taught at college through work circumstances first which then helps me in my qualification. It does help to understand some complex financial information, however, examples taught as part of the qualification mostly do not translate to real life circumstances.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
At RSM we have a number of social events throughout the year that are generally arranged on an ad hoc basis. Management are keen to involve staff in networking events too, and I have attended a number of these. There is also an annual sports day that everyone is able to partake in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think that RSM has a good working environment and also provides a good standard of training. However, long hours and commitment to the job role are required to succeed in the role. The work can be rewarding, however it is important that you are able to communicate well with others and enjoy travelling daily to clients.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
Ensure that you read the job description carefully as the job can be demanding and was not what I expected when originally applying. There is a lot of travelling involved and also a lot of responsibility is placed on you. You will also be required to communicate with some high up individuals at client sites and within the firm so it is important that you are comfortable having such discussions.
