Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a maintenance apprentice tasked with looking after machinery used to manufacture sweets. I often work on the machines that produce Rolo and Toffee Crisp. Day to day I interact internally with other engineers as well as management. When parts are required I often communicate with external suppliers such as Eriks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my programme, I enjoy coming to work and learning new things every day. I also enjoy attending college on a weekly basis. I would recommend the Nestle apprenticeship to anyone who wants a career in engineering. The apprenticeship program offers lots of new opportunities and the ability to learn new things every day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills while working for Nestle. I am now a very capable welder and can confidently machine the parts I require. I am also confident taking part in planned maintenance activities during shutdowns and when the machine is off for cleaning. I am able to respond to breakdowns and fix the machine in a timely manner to allow production to meet their goals.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme is well organised, I know what I will be studying each year at college and the qualifications I will earn by completing the apprenticeship. I also know what I will be doing on a day to day basis, I have an engineering planner who issues daily tasks on a maintenance plan every week. I refer to this every morning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive lots of support from my employer when needed, however I enjoy figuring things out for myself. For example if I was stuck on a particular task I would try myself and do some research before asking others for help. When needed there is always help available from both management and other engineers on site.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I am supported by my training provider. I have regular reviews with my training assessor, he looks at my log book and asks questions about my current progress. The training provider also comes in to work and observes certain jobs that I do. If I was having problems at college my training provider could help me to solve the problem.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification I am gaining at college helps me to be a successful engineer. The college course gives me the basic theoretical knowledge I need to work on the machines and develop the maintenance skills I need to be a maintenance engineer. In the first year of my apprenticeship my training provider taught me skills such as welding and machining I have used these skills may times at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are many different extra-curricular activities to take part in at work, we have a football team and nestle supports many charity activities. I receive two extra days off work a year to do volunteering work for charity, there is lots of sponsored events organized by nestle such as walks and bike rides we are all encouraged to take part in this.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Nestlé to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend the Nestle apprenticeship to anyone who wants a career in engineering. The apprenticeship program offers lots of new opportunities and the ability to learn new things every day. I enjoy coming to work and feel valued even as an apprentice, I can see that I make a difference on a day to day basis.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nestlé?
I would tell anyone applying to nestle to be confident and not be afraid to challenge others during the interview process. Teamwork is also important. Research what TPM Total preventative maintenance is what it involves. TMP is a big part of life at Nestle being familiar with this process would give a head start.
