Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a senior care assistant for a care agency. I mostly support care homes when they are short staffed. I will assist the residents in their day to day care needs, this will sometime require administering medication. I will ensure all staff are aware what requires completing for the shift, I will also complete require daily paperwork and complete any tasks asked of me. Working for an agency it is beneficial to be able to work on my own initiative.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed the programme as my training kept me engaged. There was lots to learn and I enjoyed researching and learning in an active way as opposed to class room learning. I found it very informative and well put together to ensure I got the best out of it. It was great how my trainer identified my learning style and tailored my training in a way a could understand.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a lot about legislation and the need for policies procedures. I have learnt about the importance of supervisions and reviews. I have learnt more about dementia and how to support people and families suffering. I have learnt the importance of person centred care planning and ensuring good communication between care staff and office staff. I have learnt the need for different levels of management and the different management styles needed.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My trainer was in constant contact with me all sessions were booked in advance and I was able to change if necessary. The programme was set out in a good structured way so I was able to see what I had accomplished and what was still required to complete. Regular reviews were a good way to see have I was managing the course and how it was helping my within my role as work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I changed jobs towards the end of the course, my original employer was encouraging for the most part but at times I was required to change my sessions due to being sent out to attend client visits. The meeting room that we were given to use had poor internet so was difficult when completing video calls.
My second employer was supportive and ensured I was given time off to complete learner sessions. Better facilities to use ie: internet connection.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider was also very supportive and easy to get hold of if needed. My trainer was polite, very knowledgeable and very support in providing or suggesting research materials. There has been regular contact throughout and lots of feedback given to help me through. My trainer did not give up on me and was quick to work out the best way for me to train and learn.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I believe with the knowledge I have learnt I am more confident within my role and feel when the time is right for me, I will go further in my career with the qualifications I have gained. My trainer has taught me to question more and look more n depth at the finer details. Completing this qualification has also taught me to have more patients and to allow for mistakes as this is also how we learn.

Would you recommend Realise to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe the train programme would be well suited for most people as there are many different ways to learn and this is adapted to each person. There is plenty of support given and I feel expectations are manageable along with the time-frame given. It is good that you can also complete more than one qualification at a time. I have completed Diploma level 5 in Health and Social Care, Level 2 English and Level 2 Maths.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Realise?
I would advise anyone that if they are to apply to Realise Training then they need to be committed and prepared to work independently. Although the trainers are their to support. I would also advise they use the support given to them as this is invaluable.
