Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a BBC apprentice, I'm able to explore all corners of broadcast production and software. I’ve been lucky enough to get involved with some pretty amazing projects. From being part of the team that engineered CNN’s move to their shiny, new London bureau, to getting hands on with innovative tech to power remote broadcast workflows like NDI and SRT. Recently I’ve been helping install a new studio in New Broadcasting House.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

A huge reason I find it so enjoyable is the people. Within my cohort are amazing people, yet all completely different backgrounds. Plus, the BBC as a whole spans so many areas there are so many interesting abs exciting people to meet, chat with and learn from. I also enjoy the mix of content we cover - from creative applications of media and storytelling to theoretical knowledge behind the world’s most impactful technologies
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I’ve learnt so many technical and professional skills. Mainly, I’ve become more confident with approaching new people and asking for help which I depend on as an apprentice. I’ve also learnt about the importance of technologies such as computer networks, software and broadcast production while also being able to explore the theory and intricacies of each.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well structured. I like the block-based apprenticeship of 3-month rotations. Uni, then placement, then repeat.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Lots - the management team are great and approachable
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Lots, the same as the average uni student. They also have an apprenticeship-focused team.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Lots. We can learn about something one week and practically apply it a few weeks down the line. Learning a bit about something before being thrown into studios gives me confidence to ask better questions.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Despite the pandemic, there’s been many online events for us to join and we’ve been able to chat with other apprentices throughout it all. Hopefully I can join a sports team when things open up

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Do it. Never think the BBC is not for you - the BBC is for everyone. You never know who you might meet and what kind of area you’ll end up in. Just make sure sure you be yourself, bring originality and friendly. Can’t go wrong.
