Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Civil Engineering Technician Apprentice, I am heavily involved in drawing production and design work on some major projects within the UK and overseas. It is my responsibility to ensure that drawings are at an acceptable level to be issued to Clients and that design work undertaken conforms to the relevant standards.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I very much enjoy coming to work due to the team that I work with and the projects that I work on. We have a great team atmosphere, which has greatly helped my development. I would recommend the Civil Engineering industry to anyone interested.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have gained a wealth of Engineering knowledge through work-based experience, including highways, drainage and earthworks. I have also learnt some of the underlying principles of Engineering through my college course, where I earned an overall grade of D*D*. I am currently aiming to become professionally qualified with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My apprenticeship is very well structured when in the workplace, with my resource leader ensuring that I always keep busy on projects and supplying resources for support. My mentor has supported me to aim for professional qualification. Support from college was good, although sometimes I found myself stuck and unsure on who to ask for help from.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a great deal of support from my employer. All colleagues are happy to help when I encounter a problem and take time to explain why it is a problem, rather than just providing a solution. It is also very easy to access information from past projects and industry standards.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Support from college is generally good and they aim to help me where possible. I sometimes found myself unsure on who to go to for guidance and ended up speaking to work colleagues or peers from my classes.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The knowledge I have gained through my college course has provided me with a good foundation of Civil Engineering. This enables me to better understand the tasks that I am given by my employer.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are often networking events set up through the company, whether this be project specific, divisional or just a team meet-up. I have also become a STEM ambassador, where there are many events to inspire the younger generation with STEM.
