Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a design engineer for mechanical and public health building services systems in a variety of healthcare projects around the UK. My role is to design a system from scratch for a certain discipline (e.g. ventilation), which entails problem solving, calculations, and then drawing using computer aided software.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I throughouly enjoy my programme and thoroughly enjoy my job as well. It was 100% the correct decision for me to take the apprenticeship route, and to find a company so invested in growing people and supporting learning and development is an added bonus and makes the whole process a much more enjoyable one.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I am studying for a BEng Building Services Engineering degree at university, fully funded by the company, and therefore I am learning and gaining new skills and knowledge from attendance at university weekly. I also learn and gain new skills whilst working through direct exposure to real world projects. The skills and knowledge I have learnt include: understanding and application of engineering systems, computer aided design software use & teamwork and personal skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is organised very well. I attend university on day release weekly, and then work for the remaining 4 weekdays. With this structure, I am able to constantly learn and develop from others and by applying myself to real world projects. Its thanks to my colleagues that I am able to learn new skills and gain a better understanding in all aspects of my field.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support I receive from my employer is second to none. My colleagues and superiors are always on hand to help me and listen to me if I ever have a problem. They are able to teach me, show me and get me involved in things I haven't tried before which allows me to excel in my job. On top, they are genuinely nice and friendly people which makes the job even more enjoyable
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Due to COVID-19, the online learning programme set out by the university on a whole hasn't been great. Unfortunately because of this my learning and development through the university has been hindered by the ongoing pandemic, and I would comfortably say I enjoy and learn and develop more of my skills and knowledge through my employer than the university.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I would say that I learn and develop more through my employer directly, rather than through the training provider. What I learn on a day-to-day basis in the workplace helps me further my knowledge through university studies
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of extra-curricular activities in the workplace. The social element is very important to help grow people and to help them integrate into the team effectively. The kindness and humour of my colleagues has really enhanced and allowed me to grow into a more confident person, and I have gained some great friends along the way.
