Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
- Learning about products HSBC offers clients in Large Corporates through networking;
- Completing tasks to fulfil key objectives surrounding credit risk, product suite, and non-financial risk, including Management Information (MI), annual renewals, reputational and environmental risk analyses, and cashflow analysis
- Raising money for MIND through external fundraising site JustGiving for CSR
- Working with ERGs to increase conversations around disability in the workplace (intern project)
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. I was given genuine tasks such as management information, credit renewals, and reputational risk reports to complete with guidance. These are all things that were sent directly to managers within the bank and also the Large Corporate clients.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Endless support and guidance. My manager has been fantastic, and has taken a lot of time to help with my personal and professional development. People are genuinely happy to help across the bank, and even reaching out to a stranger to build your network results in them taking 30+ minutes to explain their role and the significance of what they do to you. Everyone is incredibly helpful.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Really positive and energetic. There is a lot of praise dealt out from managers, accomplishments are recognised and shared. My colleagues, managers, emerging talent team, and the other interns have been such a pleasure to work with, and there is definitely a culture of taking care of oneself and supporting others.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to HSBC
Make sure you show your personality as well as skills; HSBC will more likely hire someone with no financial experience who is personable and friendly and who can build on constructive criticism, rather than someone who knows their way around finance but is not easy to get along with. Show desire to learn and ability to develop, and that you have other interests outside of work. They're looking for humans, not finance robots.
