Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The scheme was filled with a range of activities, including knowledge sessions led by trainees, associates, and partners about key developments of the firm and the work that it does. As a vac schemer, you are assigned a supervisor (usually an associate or senior associate), and they will allocate you work to do on live matters that their team is working on. This might include tasks like reviewing documents, conducting legal research, proofreading, and legal drafting.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
There was great explanation given around the business and the roles that are available. We were told about how the vac scheme acts as an assessment for a role as a trainee at the firm. We were able to find out what the role of trainee entails, by being delegated live trainee work and by being paired with a trainee for each of the seats we were in. You are encouraged to go for coffee chats during the scheme, and that is usually the perfect way to learn more about the work you could do as a trainee at RPC.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The scheme has been excellent for developing confidence and seeking feedback on tasks. There is a real encouragement here to reflect on your performance and the work you produce, as well as thinking about what could be done to improve. I personally developed skills in document review, written and verbal communication, and teamwork. I was able to build further on my time management and organisation skills during my time on the scheme.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture is incredibly welcoming and inclusive. RPC prides itself on being strikingly real, and this is exactly what I experienced during my time here. Everyone I have spoken to has been incredibly lovely and helpful, and the firm goes above and beyond with some of their DEI initiatives to ensure all members of the firm are recognised and included. The office is open plan, which is great as the partners and associates are very approachable.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RPC
Be sure to ask for feedback for any piece of work you do. Show enthusiasm by asking questions and take initiative to ask for more work, or communicate if you have been given too much. The firm values consistent communication, so be sure to keep your supervisors, or anyone that has delegated you work, updated on how the task is getting along!
