Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Manufacturing Operations Intern, I developed and maintained PowerApps including the OR137 Build App (tracking magnet build stages), the NVA Submission App (logging downtime and non-value-added tasks), and an Equipment Booking App (resource scheduling). I also used Excel to analyse and optimise processes for different magnet types like OR132 and OR135, focusing on lead times, buffer times, and risk & severity analysis. My day-to-day involved collaborating with technicians, reviewing production data, and implementing digital tools to streamline and visualising operations.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a high level of responsibility from early on. I independently designed and deployed multiple PowerApps used daily by technicians and managers on the shop floor, including the OR137 Build App, NVA Submission App, and Equipment Booking App and the 3-D Printing App. I was also trusted to analyse production data for OR132 and OR135 magnets, where my findings directly influenced process improvements. My work supported site-wide efficiency and digitalisation goals, and I regularly collaborated with senior stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I’ve developed new skills in building low-code solutions using PowerApps, including creating interactive forms, galleries, and approval workflows connected to SharePoint. I also enhanced my Excel analysis skills, using formulas and pivot tables to identify process inefficiencies for different magnet types (e.g. OR132 and OR135). Alongside technical skills, I improved my communication, project management, and ability to translate shop floor needs into digital solutions that improve productivity and visibility.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout my placement, especially from my line manager [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] They were always approachable, provided clear direction, and encouraged me to take ownership of my projects. Their feedback helped me grow both technically and professionally, and they created an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and exploring new ideas. Their mentorship played a big role in the success of my internship.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture at Siemens Healthineers was very welcoming and supportive. Everyone was easy to talk to and approachable, regardless of their role or seniority. There was a strong sense of collaboration, and people across different departments had a wide range of expertise, which made it easy to learn and grow. Even though I worked independently most of the time, I always knew help was available when needed, and that made a big difference to my confidence and development.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my placement; it was a rewarding and hands-on experience. I had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that made a real impact on day-to-day operations. Being trusted to build and deploy apps used across the shop floor was both exciting and motivating. The supportive team, combined with the freedom to take initiative and solve real problems, made it a genuinely fulfilling year alongside the company visit to the new facility in Bicester and the 3-D printing event (RapidFusion) in Exeter which was exciting to be a part of.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Siemens Healthineers to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Siemens Healthineers
My advice would be to show genuine interest in manufacturing and process improvement, and be ready to take ownership of your work early on. It would also help if you could display any experience with operations, even if it’s from university projects as Siemens Healthineers values practical, problem-solving skills. Always be proactive, ask questions, and take the time to understand the shop floor processes at the beginning. Most importantly, be open to learning and don’t be afraid to suggest new ideas, they really value innovation and initiative.
