Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
At Softcat, I worked within the account management team in delivering tailored IT solutions to clients across various sectors. My daily tasks included managing CRM systems, preparing client proposals, and coordinating with internal departments to ensure smooth service delivery.
I regularly interacted with internal teams marketing, and technical specialists to align on client strategies and project execution. Externally, I engaged with clients to understand their needs, provide updates, and support ongoing projects, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
My responsibilities included assisting in account planning, tracking sales performance, and contributing to client retention initiatives. I also supported the execution of marketing campaigns and vendor-led initiatives.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
In my role as an Account Manager at Softcat, I was responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of client accounts by delivering tailored IT solutions. I regularly visited customer offices to strengthen relationships, understand their evolving needs, and present strategic technology recommendations. I also engaged with key vendor partners to explore new offerings, coordinate joint initiatives, and ensure the best value for our clients.
My responsibilities included:
Conducting face-to-face client meetings to build trust and uncover opportunities.
Collaborating with vendors such as Microsoft, Cisco, and Dell to align solutions with client goals.
Managing the full sales cycle from prospecting to post-sale support.
Coordinating with internal teams to deliver seamless service and project execution.

During my time at Softcat, I received consistent and meaningful support from my manager, who provided clear guidance, regular feedback, and opportunities for professional development. I was encouraged to take ownership of my work while knowing I had a strong support system behind me.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My placement year at Softcat has been an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable experience. From day one, I felt welcomed into a supportive and dynamic environment where I was encouraged to grow both personally and professionally. The opportunities to work closely with clients, vendors, and internal teams gave me valuable insight into the world of IT sales and account management.
Beyond the day-to-day work, the company culture made my time here truly memorable—whether it was team socials, sports events, or the legendary work parties, there was always something to look forward to. I’ve learned so much, built lasting relationships, and had a lot of fun along the way. I’m genuinely grateful for the experience and proud to have been part of the Softcat team.
