Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Community management on the Samsung Community. This involves a general scroll to see what people are talking about or having issues with. Replying to any comments or private messages. Also looking at statistics to see whether we’re getting more or less traffic, and figuring out why this is.
Managing the Members Stars programme through planning and attending events, sampling programmes etc. Working across the business for partnerships in this space.
But tends to be very different every day.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Definitely given a lot of responsibility. The year started off with me and my manager having a pretty equal split of community management. However, I quickly took a bigger part of this as I thrived and really enjoyed it. Now I 100% manage the Samsung Community and it’s my main priority.
Workload differs, sometimes I don’t have as much responsibility and I’m doing new things that I’ve thought of and then sometimes I’m doing big projects given to me by senior people

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Definitely - project management was a massive part of my role, as in the apps and services project I was project lead for this. This meant I had to use online tools such as Jira to track skills of all the team members and ensure that we stayed on track and above board.
I’ve gotten a lot less nervous presenting in front of big groups of senior people, both online and offline and I’ll feel much more confident going back to university.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Loads - my manager was amazing and he really made the whole year so much better compared to some other placements I’ve heard from!
However at the start I was split across 2 different teams in different roles and my other manager dropped me when her workload got too much and didn’t really give me a proper reason why, which wasn’t great and made the atmosphere quite awkward.
However my other manager made up for this and was worth more than having 2 managers! Love him

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It’s quite expected to work longer and more hours than you should - being asked to work on the weekends is fairly normal and unless you’re you can say no then you’re probably going to have to. I was pretty chill at saying no my hours are up but I know some others aren’t.
It’s very focused on senior people and they don’t really speak to the people below them, especially the Koreans in the office - may be a culture thing.
Very fast paced but I think this sometimes means people are overworked - and you’re not allowed to claim overtime

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my placement - there are definitely some things that I’d change, but I’m sure that’s true for all placements.
My manager was definitely a highlight, and seeing as I was the first person he ever managed, I’d say he did amazingly and was a godsend.
I would love to come back to Samsung, but in the role I have now, however they’re very strict on headcount so I don’t think this would be likely. They also kept firing people whenever [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] said they weren’t needed - very HQ led which is really annoying.
It sometimes felt unclear what the placement team’s day-to-day responsibilities were, as some of the events they organised seemed a bit rushed or lacking in impact.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Samsung Electronics to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Samsung Electronics
Definitely go for it, but you have to be prepared to be rushed off your feet and very busy, so i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who doesn’t like having a busy busy life.
Your role will be very different every day and you’ll always have loads of different things to be working on, with loads of different people.
However I’m not sure about the future prospects, due to the HQ centred culture and what they says goes.
