Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
In my role within the Digital Product Platform (DPP) team, specifically in Diagnostics, my day-to-day work involved hands-on testing and debugging using hardware rigs and diagnostic tools. I regularly worked with diagnostic scripts, writing and maintaining them in both C++ and Python to support vehicle system testing. A typical day included running tests, debugging issues, and collaborating with developers and engineers to resolve issues. I also contributed to the development of automated test scripts and supported the validation of diagnostic features to ensure software reliability and performance.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my placement. I was trusted to manage my own projects and expected to think independently before seeking help, which really helped me grow in confidence. I had opportunities to take the lead on certain tasks and was never treated like “just a student” - I felt like a valued member of the team from the start.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I’ve developed both technical and practical skills during my placement. I improved my coding abilities in Python and C++, particularly in writing diagnostic scripts and automated tests. I also learned the importance of writing tests before developing code, which helped me understand test-driven development practices.
On the practical side, I gained hands-on experience with debugging and testing using tools like MobaXterm, Wireshark, and working in Linux (Ubuntu) environments. I also became more confident using Git for version control and collaboration.

The atmosphere was professional but relaxed, and everyone was approachable and willing to help.
