Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
It's extremely dependant on team as I've had been in multiple teams all with very different day-to-day tasks. Currently it's hardware design so computer work using CAD packages to look at schematics, overviewing datasheets to ensure components and integrated circuit will be fit for purpose and meetings collaborating with other teams.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Projects I have done have been used by the company, so equipment I created was used for testing. Proof of concept hardware I've designed and created will be used as the basis or beginning point of new designs. Hardware evaluation kits I've helped integrate will be used by software teams to develop software. All projects I've done have been useful to the company, I have not been given a project to 'keep me busy' managers like to give projects that will be utilised.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I've learnt new skills I otherwise wouldn't have at University. Specifically PCB design and schematic design. Many new software's and systems although this is team specific. I have a new knowledge with KiCad, Altium and developed my MATLAB. My soft skills such as communication and confidence have massively improved. This includes presenting to other including colleagues, managers and senior managers.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Every single manager has been supportive in my journey at JLR. They are always willing to help develop skills and listen to any issues that should arise. They're supportive too of giving many opportunities, they've been happy to accommodate site visits to different areas and give me time off to work on necessary skills or things such as university. Most colleagues have been more than happy to give me advice and teach me about new concepts or support with work.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is good, everyone is welcoming and there are frequent events showing technology, cultural events or other works. The atmosphere can depend on site, so the flagship site (Gaydon) has the most occurring, events, talks and showcases with exceptional buildings. Where as other site such as Whitley are a little left behind. There are team socials which are frequent for teams and managers are supportive of their teams. There is an early careers team which have set up lots of events such as the winterball and other socials for undergraduates and graduates outside of work.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my placement a lot. There has been fantastic work opportunities and there has been an excellent community of undergraduates in which I've made life long friends. I'd say that the placement has been better than university in terms of opportunities and freedom.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to JLR
In your application, show confidence in your work, don't downplay anything you have done that you think might be of worth. The company fosters a culture so during the application there is a greater importance on how you'd fit into a team and the company as a person rather than your technical skills. Technical skills can be developed on the job and some will have to be developed on the job regardless.
