Commercial Industrial Placement Review

My daily tasks change depending which team I am working under. Within marketing my days were quite varied, with me assisting team members on various campaigns, for the brand team I had 3 main area's in which I was working in so I was given the opportunity to manage my own time, I also got a lot of opportunities to leave the office for work trips. My other 2 departments were more standardised with me doing similar tasks and reports throughout the week.

Across the whole of my placement I have been given a good amount of responsibility, such as taking the lead on projects individually and within a team. Within strategy discussions I feel as though my opinions are valued and embraced by the team. Although I have been able to work independently on projects, I still have had mentorship from my managers and am able to arrange regular catch ups to remain on brief.

As a placement student at Unite Students we attend skills workshops ran by the early careers team, these cover presentation, interview and Excel skills. Within my job role I have learnt many transferable skills such a meeting etiquette, independent speaking, general knowledge of businesses and how they run. More specifically, I have developed my confidence within Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign as well as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Our early careers advisors are incredible and regularly arrange catch ups and workshops for all placement students, they also tailor the workshops to our requests to enable us to gain a wide array of knowledge. For my role, I was given a manager within each team, each manager arranged a weekly catch up to talk through any issues, concerns or projects I am facing or working towards.

The company has a wonderful culture in which everyone is so inclusive, kind and friendly. Everyone is so open to helping one another out and working together for the bigger picture. During my time here the companies new values were launched and they feel so aligned to the working environment. In terms of work life balance, my managers have been very accommodating and understanding when I have Uni assignments or appointments I need to attend.

I have loved my time on placement and feel like I have gained invaluable knowledge which has been so beneficial for my degree. Working alongside each of my teams has been very beneficial to understand what areas I would like to focus on in the future. Whilst having other placement students has been great as we've all become such close friends.
