Communications and PR Undergraduate Review

I would support the internal communications team with the creation and distribution of written and video content to VWFS employees. One of my main responsibilities was the building and sending of our business-wide weekly newsletter which provided a round-up of articles published on our Intranet (the writing and publishing of which was another key responsibility of mine), and any other key messages from our Board and events coming up. I also supported with external communications helping to source and manage content on our LinkedIn profile.
Two key projects have been the campaign to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the business, which involved the delivery of a 3-day event as well as the creation of a 16-page newspaper for colleagues to take away, and also the building of a new Intranet.

I felt I was given not only responsibility on tasks but the responsibility to decide my level of involvement in various things. There were projects that the responsibility would naturally fall to me to carry out like building the weekly newsletter and publishing articles on our Intranet and managing that but then other projects that interested me I was able to take on myself and own.

I've developed my written communication skills and my video creation and editing skills. The role requires good organisation, time management and prioritisation skills which I have definitely improved too. I feel I have also developed my verbal communication skills and am a more confident person which has come from the nature of the role and number of different colleagues I've worked with while on placement.
Technically I am considerably more comfortable using MS 365 applications and specifically to communications I have learnt how to build and manage intranets and use tools to build and send mass, business-wide emails.

I consistently felt supported during my placement and felt I could go to my line manager at any time to talk about something if I needed to. My team are all close and that helped with this element too. In terms of guidance I felt I could go to any member of my team if I had a question.

The company is renowned for having a good culture and I did feel like it was an inclusive and supportive place to work. The Board are visible which is great to see for someone just starting their career and likewise it feels like if you wanted to find out more about an area or areas, there is the opportunity to ask and find out more.

I massively enjoyed my time. I enjoyed the role and am coming out of it having learnt and developed both personally and professionally. My team were great and the experience wouldn't have been the same without them. I have developed good relationships with people around the business and have loved the exposure I've had to all areas in my role. I feel more confident to step into the world of work having done my placement.
