IT Risk and Security Undergraduate Review

My role involved supporting an experienced team in day to day security operations, this varied from investigating malware alerts, managing vulnerability reporting & working with different teams to remediate, and having a large part in our supplier security process.

At the start of my placement, a lot of time was spent familiarising myself with policies & the different teams across the business, learning a lot without necessarily having responsibilities before proper training.
When comfortable with day to day processes, I was quickly given independence and found my responsibilities only grew as time went on, from learning our standard processes to creating my own.

Throughout the placement I have learnt a significant amount, from a security perspective, analysing phishing attempts, investigating malware alerts and documenting security incidents, managing vulnerabilities across different business functions. Outside of specific security skills, I have improved in my professional research, writing & referencing through creating/editing internal policies, in terms of both wider legal requirements & specific to the financial industry.

When I was onboarded I was given significant time with the team to familiarise myself with our various workflows, following this I had 1 to 1s with my manager & all members of the team, working alongside them everyday and having morning team wide meetings.

Very positive company wide.

I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside my team and different colleagues, in terms of location, I'd rather work elsewhere in terms of location but the job has made up for it.
