Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
In my placement, I work within the training function, supporting various projects across the site. My day-to-day tasks are varied and dynamic. I typically start by reviewing emails and meetings, then move on to project work which includes developing training materials and work instructions. I also manage document uploads to our internal document management system, collaborating closely with quality and health & safety teams to ensure accuracy and compliance.
When new equipment is introduced, I take the lead on creating the necessary training documentation and updating relevant trackers. I also support departmental updates, contribute to team communications, and maintain dashboards to monitor training progress. Occasionally, I assist with administrative tasks and help align our processes with other departments for consistency.
Overall, it’s a busy and rewarding role that offers a lot of variety and responsibility.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a high level of responsibility throughout my placement, with full autonomy over several projects. Some of these I completely revamped and restructured independently, while others required collaboration with key stakeholders across the business. I was never treated as “just a student”—I was trusted to manage my workload without micromanagement.
My responsibilities included developing training materials and work instructions, managing document uploads to our internal system, and leading the documentation process for new equipment. I also maintained training trackers, coordinated with health and safety for compliance input, and supported departmental updates and communications. Additionally, I created dashboards to monitor training progress and helped align documentation processes across departments.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
During my placement, I’ve gained a wide range of new skills and significantly developed existing ones. I’ve completed several Microsoft training courses, including Power BI and PowerApps, as well as modules covering project management, Excel, data handling, and communication. I also achieved my Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification and completed a Level 2 Business Administration course in my own time.
In terms of personal development, I’ve improved my communication skills—both written and verbal—through regular collaboration with different teams. Managing multiple projects at once has strengthened my time management and organisational abilities, particularly in tracking progress, maintaining documentation, and providing timely updates.

I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout my placement. Sitting next to my manager allowed for regular brainstorming and easy access to help whenever I needed it. We also had frequent one-to-one meetings where I could raise any concerns or ask for feedback.
Although the team was small, the support I received—both professionally and personally—was excellent. Everyone was approachable and willing to help, which made a big difference in my development and confidence in the role.
