Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Mostly a test engineering role where you will be responsible for planning, coordination and analysis of mechanical tests. Often this will include checking on the status of the test rigs, obtaining data and then analysing this to obtain results for test requestors. Often you are required to get hands on to build and design the rigs yourselves, seeing the project through from conception to completion, which will typically involve a good bit of data analysis too.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Responsibility was a massive part of this role. Work was typically assigned to 1 or 2 people, meaning that you held high responsibility for the work produced. While guidance was given, I was often left to complete my own work with the understanding that I will ask for help when required. I was given a large number of work orders that were only for me to complete and the content of the work was selected well such that it would not be overbearing but would also develop new skills through challenge.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
This role strongly develops skills in data analysis and the relevant software, these being Siemens TestLab and Excel in particular, with the option of MATLAB for those who dare. I have learnt a huge number of new and highly applicable skills, such as vibration analysis, bolt tensile and ultrasonic testing, statistical fatigue testing as well as general principles in mechanical testing and rig design, with the option to develop CAD skills. Work being split into small work orders greatly develops prioritisation and time management skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I felt supported throughout my placement. My manager ensured that my work was not too overwhelming but was also suitable for my skill level and challenging enough to teach me new skills. He was particularly supportive with my additional work for university. My team was also very supportive and made me feel like an integral part of the team and not just an add-on for the year. The company gave suitable support throughout, ensuring suitable safety, development opportunities and pastoral support.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I found that the culture within my team was excellent, with a friendly atmosphere that made me feel like I could ask for help from people when required. No members of the team or wider company were confrontational or rude in any of the interactions I had. The company culture was generally good however, there is a clear disconnect between high level management and employees, particularly for appreciation, compensation and succession planning. The business is often very successful but rarely compensates or rewards those who are required to work outside of their normal commitments.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement due to the combination of the social life accessible with the other placements as well as the job opportunity. I have seen great development in my personal and professional skills, while really enjoying the work that I have done. The work order structure allows for a great sense of satisfaction as work is contained within a single, relatively small project, so you get to see the full development of your work from planning to testing to analysis to completion.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
Talent acquisition at Cummins show a strong interest in well developed character and the ability to communicate well. Many of the placements agree that a big part of the hiring process was informal, with conversations with HR and hiring managers. There is a clear push to hire those who show additional interests outside of their studies. This does not mean that technical capability is not an important part as well- definitely learn the required knowledge for the role, but it appears that personal qualities are a key consideration in the hiring process.
