Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a project based team, the work varies depending on assigned project roles. In the rail bridges team, the work is usually related to designing, assessing, and maintaining bridges on rail lines. The placement role is similar to a new graduate role in terms of types of work allocated, and responsibility assigned.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Given a similar amount of responsibility as a graduate engineer. Smaller projects will involve responsibility to handle own work and meet deadlines on time, and larger projects will require more team working and keeping up to date with the weekly/regular project team catch-ups.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Outside of projects the support and guidance was good, along with a 'graduate week' where some useful industry relevant knowledge was taught. In projects the training depends on the type of work required and the management of the project managers. In some projects, the guidance for doing certain parts of the work can be improved.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
People are generally friendly and easy to work with, though there's not too much interactions outside of teams unless projects involve direct interdisciplinary communication.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I fairly enjoyed my placement, there were some project difficulties but that's more reflective of the industry than through the fault of MM. Some aspects of project management could be improved, but overall it was mostly handled well. Variety and opportunities for different types of work was great, and encouragement for learning new skills was very good.
