Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The role is a combination of administrative and creative support, and my regular tasks included providing coverage on material (scripts, books etc), including giving written or verbal feedback; creating and maintaining various reports and databases; conducting research and minute taking.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Because of the nature of the creative process and team, much of this intern is what you make it - so I'd imagine for every intern it has been slightly different. Personally, after initially settling in, I've been able to take on a lot of responsibility outside of the job description - including covering for my manager, getting involved in creative projects and helping with changing processes and strategies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely developed my ability to look at material from a more critical perspective, and have learned how to write notes and coverage in response. I've also been able to cultivate my administrative skills, including minute taking and diary management, which have been invaluable when thinking about my next role.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I've had a lot of support from my manager - she is always 100% open and has always made herself available to me to ask questions or talk things through. I was given a handbook when I started, outlining the role as a whole, and she has always been so clear when communicating changes or new responsibilities. The wider team is similarly supportive and have always been available when I've wanted to ask questions, either about my tasks or their career journeys.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
NBCU generally is very welcoming, everyone is kind and always open to chat and the general atmosphere is really positive. There are often events happening around the building, and I'd say it's a lot more laid back and fun than you might expect from an equivalent big, corporate, American institution. Personally, I've found it quite hard to assimilate where DEI is concerned - although the company is admittedly doing better than many, I've often felt 'outnumbered' in terms of seeing people like myself, especially in race and background/class.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
For the most part, I've had a wonderful time here. I work with a really lovely team and truly enjoy the role. I feel it's made an immeasurable difference in terms of practical experience - I'm so much more comfortable going into job hunting now, as I've learned so much from an admin/logistical perspective. Working in creative, it's also been really cool seeing how it works from the inside - as someone who has always been involved/interested in film and TV in general. On a day-to-day, I genuinely love what I do and where I work - the only negative has been that feeling of being outnumbered, and not seeing many people like myself around. Some days, it has been really difficult, but for the most part I've gotten used to it and know that it's to be expected of a company like this one. More can always be done, but I still have enjoyed my time and think it's a great place to be.
