Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The Bridges industrial placement role offer hands-on experience in design, inspection and structural assessment of bridges and other heavy civil infrastructure. On a day to day basis, you will complete calculations, create models and technical drawings using software such as MIDAS and AutoCAD and write reports. There is opportunity for site visits and collaboration across other disciplines within Mott MacDonald.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I feel grateful to have been given a high level of involvement within projects from such an early stage of my industrial placement. This allowed me to broaden my knowledge of engineering theory and practice. I assisted in analysis and calculations of bridge structures, created technical drawings and wrote many technical and inspection reports for client submission. This responsibility helped build my confidence.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
In my bridges placement year, I have gained invaluable new skills in structural analysis and using design software such as MIDAS, AutoCAD and grasshopper. I have gained skills in technical report writing for submission to client. I have also developed many existing skills including: teamwork, communication and time management skills, as I have worked on a variety of projects with many different experienced engineers. Overall, this year in industry has significantly contributed towards my technical and interpersonal development in bridge engineering.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received guidance from the bridges team throughout my placement. In quarterly reviews, I was given feedback from my line manager, which allowed me improve my skills and provide valuable insights on tasks. Th environment at Motts was very collaborative therefore it allowed me to ask questions and receive assistance when needed.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have enjoyed my Placement on the Bridges Team at Mott MacDonald. The hand on experience has allowed me to apply my knowledge from university in real-life projects. The positive and supportive environment has allowed me to grow both technically and professionally. The variety of projects, which I have worked on throughout my placement year has been rewarding and engaging. This experience has greatly enriched my professional development and passion towards the civil engineering industry.

My advice would be to show enthusiasm and demonstrate a passion for the industry. I would advise others applying to demonstrate strong teamwork skills, be eager to learn and show there ability to communicate effectively. Lastly, I would show integrity, respect and drive; following the key PRIDE values.
