Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Structural engineering industrial placement student, which involved mostly supporting senior colleagues with their workload and learning from them.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Some responsibility in line with the importance of the task.
The current project is a multi-billion £ project which makes it quite hard to have too much say. However, I was tasked with work for the client.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Applied engineering principles learned in university, which reinforced my knowledge of them. Furthermore, plenty of opportunities were available to develop skills by Mott MacDonald. Plenty of live webinars available to improve software skills and safety within the nuclear industry.
I had the opportunity to work on automating processes within Motts, that required some coding. Furthermore, I also introduced VBA to my Excel skillset.
Was supported to pass the IstructE's structural behaviour certificate.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Colleagues were very helpful, and go out of their way to help you when you need it.
A general plan for the placement was missing, however if you're driven, you can easily make the most out of the opportunity.
My line manager was amazing. He supported and allowed to pursue any development initiatives I was interested in.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Company culture is top notch. Big focus on people and their wellbeing as well as career progression.
This makes it so colleagues across all grades generally have time of the day to respond to any queries or just chat about the work.
I recommend getting involved with ECP events if you have time.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Very much enjoyed my time at Motts. Would recommend to anyone who is very self-driven as you're supported the whole way.
As it's a large organisation, if you're not proactive you may slip through the cracks and end up not doing much but with the right attitude you can really extract as much value from the experience and not just to have something on the CV.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald
Make a conscious effort to show that you have an objective for why you'd like to undertake a placement.
Generally, most other students applying for the job will be fairly good so you need a way to stand out. Be confident and communicate clearly. Being a confident communicator will probably set you apart from most, as well as having defined objectives that you'd like to accomplish within the placement and how you believe these objectives will benefit your career as well as Motts.
