Industrial Placement Student Review

As a placement student, I work on various different projects to gain a wide variety of experience, I don't stay put on a single project for long and get moved around so I get a wide range of tasks. Since September to May, I've been able to work on Coordination and allocation of tasks, collating data and creating diagrams based on them for interpretation, demonstrating technical skills and using standards to solve problems, assessing defects in bridges and the correct mitigation measures, report writing and a chance to go to a site visit in Paddington. I am given the chance to work along experts and experienced engineers and ask them questions in a friendly environment, with many optional choices to learn more.

I was allowed to be independent on the projects I have worked on, with supervisors checking over and giving feedback. For an example, I was fully responsible for the drainage design of a gutter inside of a tunnel system with guidance from my supervisor. I was given enough responsibility to be able to apply my own problem solving skills and improve my technical skills without feeling overwhelmed on projects.

I have been able to earn a greater understanding of how engineering is used in the industry. A deeper understanding of how reinforcement is designed in industry and the design process to ensure quality control. I've gained experience report writing, learnt the process of iterative design and learned how to communicate with the client. I've developed a deep understanding of the common defects that rise in oldstanding bridges, with how to quickly identify a critical defect and the critical thinking skills to find the underlying cause of them and how to address them.

I reived plenty of support during my placement, when finding myself struggling I was able to freely speak to my co-workers who were always willing to help me with my problems.

The company culture and general atmosphere were very relaxed and comfortable, at no point would I say I felt unfairly treated or discriminated against. The company allows for flexible working and are understandable if an event occurs where you're late or are sick.

I enjoy my placement greatly, I have had the chance to develop my technical and social skills while having opportunities to do volunteering in the local community.
