Industrial Placement Student Review

I have worked on a variety of projects, which can change depending on what is available when you join. For each one, I have worked closely with a senior engineer who has guided me through the tasks. Day to day, I am responsible for getting my work done on time, and if I think I might miss a deadline, I make sure to be honest and let them know.

Yes, I was given a good amount of responsibility where I was trusted to work independently with minimal supervision. This independence allowed me to manage my time effectively and take full ownership of my work.

With the tasks that I have been allocated, I have had to learn how to use Midas and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design, which are both analysis software. I have also been able to improve my soft skills such as communication, self-management and organisational abilities. These were especially developed when I was working on two different projects at the same time, as I had to prioritise tasks effectively and communicate clearly with others to manage expectations and keep everyone informed about my workload.

Throughout my placement, every engineer I worked with took the time to explain the task before I began. If I had any questions, they were always willing to offer their time and guidance, ensuring I received good support throughout.

The company culture was very friendly, and the team was very welcoming when I first joined. You are also assigned a buddy, which was very helpful as it is quite a transition from university to working in an office. Overall, it was a very positive atmosphere.

I have really enjoyed my placement and did not expect to learn so much in the time I have been here. Doing the placement has given me great insight into how the industry works, which is something you cannot learn at university.
