Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Design and Drafting: Creating, amending and reviewing technical drawings. Like road layouts, drainage plans and structural details.
Technical support: Using multiple engineering software to create and amend drawings and plans.
Calculations and analysis: Performing calculations for structures and drainage other design types.
Documentation support: Assisting with working on reports, technical submissions, proposals and submissions. Compiling with formats and data specifications.
Teamwork and collaboration: Building relations with other professionals, attending out of office gatherings and events. Celebrating milestones, after work socials and team outings.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Adequate responsibly.
Allowed to shadow and support senior engineers: Drafting plans, conducting site surveys and documentation at the beginning of placement. Allowed to read and revise documents and technical drawings with guidance of bosses. Attended client meetings and getting briefed on projects.
Managing own workflow and timeline: Task with managing small part of projects, contributing with more design and safety work. Contributing and presenting personal ideas and calculation to colleagues. Allowed to work on design issues and solutions. Tasked with identifying discrepancies and implementing solutions. Proposing new approaches for challenging problems.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Develop design software proficiency: Getting hands on experience with software like AutoCad, ArcGis, Civils 3D and even other non-engineering related software which are essential for our day to day activities. Allow us to better help us draft, model and analyse more collaboratively and effectively. Learn how to ensure health and safety can be better aided by technology.
Project management and planning: Learn to help with project management to track timelines, set milestones and ensure projects are delivered on time.
Resource management: Gained new insights on how to resource labour, materials and equipment. Learnt how to allocate, track and manage across different phases of projects.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Balanced between adequate supervision and independence.
Orientation and training: Onboarding and training process where we learnt about company background, structure, specific project, safety regulations and software uses.
Mentorship: All assigned a buddy and mentor at the start of placement to guide. Experienced engineer helped navigate both technical and professional aspect of job. Buddy help bonding with colleagues in both professional and out of office settings.
Task clarification: Clear instruction on task and clarification whenever needed. Frequent check ins during task and quarterly meetings with mentors to run through goals set for the placement. Constructive feedback given after completing task.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Mott Macdonald emphasis on collaborative across department and disciplines.
Cross disciplinary project: All project requires input from different engineering specialities. Atmosphere at MM fosters an environment where team members actively shares knowledge and ideas openly. All ideas are taken to importance.
Mentorship and peer support: MM offers string mentorship and support culture especially for new and aspiring engeers. Early Career Professionals 'ECP' have regular outings, gatherings and professional engagements to connect with like minded engineers and network with colleagues in MM and other engineering company. Professional development and growth is always encouraged. EDI is always taken into account.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Experience has been very insightful and rewarding. Has been a instrumental part of finding my own career path.
Valuable learning experience: MM provides high quality learning opportunities. Gives me a chance to have real world experience that complements and supplements my academic knowledge.
Varity of task and supportive work environment: Varity of task makes day to day work interesting and prevent feeling repetitive. MM emphasize mentoring and development. Opportunities for career growth and supports professional development. Allows us to network with people who work in all types of engineering fields. Allowing me to find specialty I truly like to pursue. Highly valuable conversations with everyone.

- Be proactive and showcase knowledge and passion for engineering. Showing willingness and good adaptability skills allows individual to be a better candidate
- Showing enthusiasm for innovation and sustainability. Tailor CV to focus on relevant skills you are able to contribute to the company
- Having the ability to work in teams in necessary. Engineering is a very collaborative space and projects can only complete successfully if done so. Therefore being able to work comfortably and professionally amongst others is important aspect.
