Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role is to utilise technology to improve the operations of the country. For example, one of my project is exploring alternative data to improve stock market predictions. Every day, I would have some independent time to work on my projects and also have the opportunity to discuss my insights with my supervisor.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, my project was quite independent in the sense that I had to explore a new area that the team wanted to venture into. Hence, I was given full autonomy to explore different areas and form my own insights before discussing it with the wider team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Prior to this, I was a beginner at coding. Through my two projects, I have developed better skills in Python and in the area of machine learning. On the other hand, I also developed soft skills such as presentation skills and teamwork as I had to work with other interns to give presentations.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

My supervisor was really helpful and he replies quickly to my questions and in detail. Other members of the team were also very open and friendly to questions that I had.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was amazing. The thing that sets M&G plc apart is that they hire very diverse talent, so you will get to meet very different people from different backgrounds. Generally people are all very friendly and open to discussions. The work life balance is also great.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I fully enjoyed my internship as it gave me a chance to venture into a completely new field that I do not have much knowledge of. The projects were well structured and very stimulating and every day felt like a new challenge. On top of that, my colleagues were super friendly and I love how inclusive the company was. We also had a chance to volunteer with a charity during our internship which shows how the company values social initiatives.
