Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I attended 10 online meetings with various Gibson Dunn staff and departments throughout the day, including sessions from trainees, associates, partners and the graduate recruitment team. The meetings covered topics such as introductions to International Corporate Transactions and International Dispute Resolutions as well as having overviews of DTI, Secondments and Pro Bono. Additionally, there was a trainee panel which was incredibly insightful and a session on applications and interviews. All sessions were extremely useful and beneficial and I look forward to applying the skills/information that I gained in the future.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I felt Gibson Dunn introduced the firm very well and I believe I have gained a substantial insight into the type of law firm it is as well as the types of work it specialises in - be that transactional or litigation. Gibson gave sessions on two key areas of expertise and consistently detailed recent cases or transactions to best help us understand the business. Additionally, the talk from the Training Principle and Gibson's trainees were instrumental in helping us understand how the firm's training and post-qualification work is conducted, including how many trainees the firm takes on and some of the key differences the firm has compared to other leading law firms in London.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I was given a deep insight into two of Gibson Dunn's key areas of expertise, International Corporate Transactions and International Dispute Resolutions. Hearing from Associates involved in this area from different departments, e.g tax and M&A, was very insightful and definitely helped build my commercial awareness. Moreover, the meetings on Pro Bono, DTI and Secondments further helped my understanding of the internal runnings of a top law firm. Finally, the applications and interviews session was particularly beneficial and gave me insights and skills to use in my future applications.

I really enjoyed the Insight Day for reasons I have covered above. I particularly recognised the culture of the firm and all the speakers were very inspiring. I felt the structure of the day, including the topics of the sessions, were really relevant and suitable for first year undergraduates. I also gained many skills and pieces of advice from a variety of staff at the firm which I will definitely apply in the future.
