Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The interactive nature of the Open Day gave me greater opportunity to understand Gibson Dunn. In the morning, there were panel talks from partners, associates, and trainees, with time allocated at the end for questions. We also received advice on applications and the graduate recruitment process.
In the afternoon, I valued the chance to work alongside other successful applicants to negotiate an unseen statement as part of a case study. The oversight of an associate during this exercise provided helpful guidance. At the end of the day, the Graduate Development team debriefed the Open Day and answered any remaining questions.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
As an undergraduate of English and Related Literature, I valued the transparency and personal insight from the trainees at Gibson Dunn, especially those from a non-Law background. All of the firm's representatives also explained their roles and responsibilities with clarity. It was exciting to hear about the range and diversity of positions that the firm offers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The case study exercise developed my collaborative and critical thinking skills. Working under time pressure with people I had not previously met was challenging, but rewarding. It pushed me to articulate my argument in a short time frame, whilst remaining aware of how this fit in with the rest of the group. To do this successfully, we had to communicate with one another and be transparent about our plan.
One new skill I learnt was how to ask engaging and relevant questions. Listening to the representatives of Gibson Dunn was extremely insightful, but the questions they were asked provided an even deeper level of understanding.

Every representative of Gibson Dunn spoke highly of the firm's culture and continued commitment to its development. They emphasised the key personal qualities that they look for: some who is self-motivated, has a positive attitude, and is entrepreneurial. The trainees also expressed their gratitude at the lack of internal competition in the firm and highlighted the encouraged collaboration between Gibson Dunn members.
