Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The day involved a welcome from graduate recruitment, followed by a welcome from the Training Principal. We then got to listen to partners from international corporate transactions and international dispute resolution teams. After a short break we heard about pro bono at Gibson Dunn and then had a general overview of the application process at Gibson Dunn and what the recruitment team looks for in a candidate. Following this, we had the chance to discuss training at Gibson Dunn with current trainees. Finally, we completed a corporate exercise in a commercial awareness workshop, enabling us to understand the type of question asked at interview when given a case study based question.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was very interesting to hear about the different sectors and industries that operate within Gibson Dunn and the unique training opportunities offered within each area. I found it inspiring to find out what the staff felt differentiated the teams at Gibson Dunn from other firms that operate in similar practice areas.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The main skill that I developed was my ability to engage critically with articles in order to form opinions and arguments on a matter that I may have little prior knowledge on through the commercial awareness exercise. The exercise also improved my ability to work collaboratively on group projects conducted under time pressure, and I found I became more confident at asserting my thoughts and opinions in order to contribute meaningfully to group tasks.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I was impressed by how friendly and approachable everyone seemed. The atmosphere was very welcoming and encouraging, therefore making it easier to ask questions and engage in the tasks as there wasn't the element of intimidation or reservedness that is often the case at other firms.
