Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was placed in the Fraud Prevention team with 2 other interns. Our day-to-day was to learn from the wider team on how the bank prevents and deals with fraud by listening in on customer calls, speaking with agents on the good/bad of the system, etc. Our main project was to come up with solutions to reduce call times and streamline the process for customers.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
We were given free rein on how we wanted to carry out our projects and the types of methods and solutions used for them. We were often only given a brief and a short introduction to what they are looking for in the project, but other than that, we carried the responsibility of the progress of the project, who to consult, when to feedback to our managers, and so on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learned how to give a presentation in a more corporate setting by considering the audience and being able to capture their attention from the beginning. I have refined my networking skills, having the opportunity to practise it by meeting people from various areas in the bank and learning about what they do. I have also had the opportunity to learn new technical skills such as Figma.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
More than sufficient support. My team officially met about 2 to 3 times a week to have a catch up on the progress of our projects and what further support they could provide to ensure we could continue on efficiently. Beyond that, our managers were always on-hand to answer our questions and help with any issues. The wider team were more than willing to meet with us to support our projects and learning.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very chill and flexible atmosphere, you're free to come and go as you'd please. The bank is quite accommodating to how different people like to work in the office/at home. Everyone is really friendly and more than happy to have a chat about their role in the bank or how they can support us in our intern projects.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed the internship. It was a great opportunity to only gain experience working in a bank and build on skills needed in the corporate world, it was also an amazing way of networking and meeting new people to learn from them and get an idea of what area you would like to work in the future. The intern cohort were also a tight-knit group, going out to explore the city and do activities together outside of work.

What advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group
NatWest is not so much focused on the skills you have, but rather what you could do for them and their customers, and how willing you are to learn and develop skills and apply them to the experiences you already have/are going to have.
