Summer Vacation Scheme Review

I was placed in a randomly selected team for the week with a trainee buddy supervising me. My trainee buddy gave me a series of tasks to do, as well as some other members of the team. These tasks included drafting and reviewing documents as well as research tasks. We attended a series of talks throughout the week and were also invited to some social events.

The series of talks we were given helped to build on my understanding of the business more broadly as well as what a training contract would be like if we were successful on the scheme. Speaking to graduate development and the training principal helped to clarify these processes and the options available. We gained a more well rounded knowledge of the firm beyond just the legal work they do.

I developed my existing knowledge of the legal sector by having the opportunity to ask questions of those on my team. I built on my ability to draft and review legal documentation effectively. I also gained experience of office life and understanding the dynamics of a team. When given a range of tasks for different people, I also improved on my ability to prioritise and manage my time effectively.

The general atmosphere was very welcoming and I enjoyed getting to know the members of my team as well as those from the rest of the business at different events. The culture was non-hierarchical and I felt comfortable approaching senior members of the business throughout my time. I was welcomed into my team specifically and felt as though I was a proper member for the week rather than just a placement student.

I really enjoyed the insight, from interacting with other placement students to the members of my team and current trainees. The mixture of work and socialising opportunities was good and allowed me to enjoy my time while developing my legal skills.
