Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked as a mechatronics and Hardware engineer on the powertrain control module within the vehicle. As I was a part of two teams, I would help the hardware team in doing circuit audits to ensure the physical wire size/layout is correct. The Hardware team I was part of essentially ensures everything is correct. With the mechatronics team, I was given a problem which I had to solve using 8D methodology.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
No. I had a conversation nearer the end of the placement and I uncovered that it is because most projects tend to be long term projects and so these aren't given unless you have a permanent position and competency to complete/start project. This is understandable. As an undergraduate, I prefer to get used to the consistency of working intensely daily, and shadowing others to learn. Then, get given an opportunity to step in and apply knowledge where possible with no pressure of responsibility.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Good support. If at any point I felt that I wasn't getting enough support, I could always send a message to Early Careers who would help and set up a meeting to support and then further monitor how I'm getting on afterwards which I thought was very helpful.
How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Relaxed and enjoyable. No micro management, no pressure from others. I was given work that I felt was enjoyable to complete and so I never felt too overwhelmed or put off by my work.
At one point I did have an issue with another undergraduate's lack of professionalism. I also had an issue with one employee who behaved in a sexist manner. However, throughout my whole year, these two incidents were the only incidents. When I brought up my concern to another manager, this was handled with extreme consistent support and actions were taken with me in mind. It took me a while to come forward about these issues but I am very glad I did as it shows equality and diversity is valued in the workplace.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have gained a lot of life experiences from this placement alone. Meeting other undergraduates, socialising with strangers who also work with you and going on a Ski trip (for the first time in my life). I learnt how to adapt in situations, how to be more confident and how to approach strangers with no worry.
It was a nice break from studying, allowed me to see the purpose of my course more and helped me decide what I like and what I don't like to do in terms of working.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to JLR
Be yourself and be relaxed. Pressure of wanting the job can cause you to be very monotone, robotic and awkward. Take a few weeks to understand the company and it's processes before jumping into a big project. There's no rush and it'll be a lot easier when you've spent some time to understand your surroundings. You may find that the project becomes easier and you know who to contact when in need of help due to networking.
