Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was usually working on a computer involving improving algorithms within the Battery Management System code, but I also was able to get some hands on work with live testing as well as seeing and working with physical battery components. This is something that is often easy to get involved with as long as you ask your manager.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a good amount of responsibility. I had my own tasks and was working on new things that no one else in the business was doing, so this comes with being able to explain my findings, look for improvements, and articulate any suggestions to higher ups.
The only thing I didn't really do was lead a team. This is because most work I did was on my own or with other teams.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Besides people skills such as working with a diverse team, problem solving, time management and thinking on my feet, I have also developed many technical skills such as using MatLab Simulink, 3D Experience, creating an FMEA, using Agile and Jira, risk assessment training, and HV battery training.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received plenty of support, from my manager as well as other teams. I had frequent meetings with my manager to catch up about the work I was doing, and I could reach out to him over teams at any time and could expect a fast response.
I received as much guidance as was necessary but not too much so that I was still able to think for myself and come up with new ideas.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The atmosphere felt more relaxed than I expected for such a big company. It can be fast paced at times, but in general everyone is very very friendly (including higher-ups) and in my experience, always very helpful too. Plus people seem comfortable to be themselves... its not too serious or uptight a place. Which is very nice.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed it very much! JLR has a plethora of events or networking opportunities to get involved with, a really good work/life balance, mostly very helpful and friendly people, and because it is such a big company, there are so many groups you can join, and such a variety of people to meet! Including many other undergrads. I honestly cannot express how wonderful of an opportunity it has been to work here.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to JLR
Be yourself! Be genuine! Be enthusiastic about why you want to join! Show that you have passion about your field! You absolutely do not have to be a car enthusiast (I certainly am not).
And of course, be sure to show how you relate to the Creator's Code (which JLR holds very dear to their hearts). Best of luck to you!
