National IT Industrial Placement Student Review

My role as the industrial placement student involves providing first and second line support for reporting issues for the wider wider business. Day to day I liaise with my team and build knowledge of specific report to solve queries. I have also helped with planning and prioritising incoming demands as well as working on the development of some reports that needed to be prepared.

I don't believe I was given as much as I needed to feel fulfilled with the role. I believe if I had a slightly more structured training plan, I believe I would have been in a better position to ask for more responsibility. Most of my training was through youtube videos and online resources.

I learnt how to query databases using SQL and i developed my existing excel skills by using VBA which i used to automate certain functions within excel. I also gave presentations during my time with ALDI which helped my public speaking skills. I also developed my time management skills whilst working toward deadlines and managing expectations.

I cultivated good relationships with members of my team and utilised their expertise on topics. I dont feel like I was supported enough in my placement. I would have liked more support and guidance in my training and development especially with some of the technical programming skills.

The culture was very corporate. However I did enjoy meeting people from different teams in the social football sessions. The general atmosphere in my team was OK. I don'y have another experience that I can compare it with so it is difficult to comment on this.

I enjoyed delving into the world of work and gaining an insight into what exactly it entails. I enjoyed building relationships with new people and learning about their route to ALDI.
