Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Creative Intern, I have taken on the same responsibilities as a full-time Production Coordinator, but for one channel instead of several. This involves tracking the creation of On-Air promos cut by Creatives, making post-production bookings for audio mixes and final exports, and scheduling voiceover sessions with voiceover agencies and voiceover artists.
Another side of being a Creative Intern is to actually cut promos myself. I cut a variety of promos, ranging in length from 15 - 60 seconds
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. I was in charge of the production of all On-Air promos for Universal TV in South Africa and had to see them through from initial conception to final delivery.
On the creative side of the placement, I was responsible for cutting promos that effectively marketed the films / TV shows being aired on the EMEA channels, while also maintaining the brand identity of those channels.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt numerous new production skills in organising, scheduling, working to tight deadlines, and managing a monthly budget for voiceover sessions. I have learnt new creative skills in video editing, copy-writing, and working to briefs. I have significantly developed my existing communication skills, especially when giving and taking instructions, and pitching ideas for promos.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given considerable support and guidance during my placement. My manager was extremely proactive at ensuring that I got the most of the year, whether that be through shadowing people in departments I was interested in (audio, graphic design), organising trips to external sites (such as Sky Sports, CNBC, Extreme Music), and pushing me to accomplish more creatively within the department (building to cut longer, higher priority promos).

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture in my department was friendly and informal. I found it easy to fit in, and I always felt comfortable and very much part of the team.
Towards the end of my placement, I became more aware of underlying tensions within my department and previous feuds between individuals, which did make me less comfortable, but I never felt that the atmosphere was unprofessional
