Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role mostly consists of reviewing designs and assets to make sure that they comply with any standards or requirements whether they are legal or set out by our clients. This requires me to hold workshops with designers and contractors to conduct hazard identifications and safety measures. I also have to produce the necessary documents and files in order for these designs to be accepted by the client.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was basically given the same level of responsibility as a graduate. I got to hold my own workshop meetings and I had a heavy enough workload.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt a lot about rail as well as other principles which can be transferred between different industries. In terms of rail, the key things I learnt about were different types of civil
structures such as embankments, viaducts, etc. I’ve learnt how to optimize systems using Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) modelling. Using RAM, I learnt how to run simulations using different materials and components of a design, to see how they affect the lifecycle of a system. The data I gathered was used to consider which materials or components were best suited to meet the client’s requirements. My projects required the use of various IT. Some where ones I was already familiar with but had then just to further improve on, such as Excel. Some where new such as Reliability Workbench for RBDs and RAM modelling, PowerBI, IBM DOORS and Visio.

Plenty. I had a very large team working with me and no one was reluctant to help me. They actually encouraged it.

Everyone was welcoming from the first minute. They all made sure that I settled in very well and did whatever they could to make me feel like one of their own.

The best advice I would give is make sure that whatever you are applying for, you have a good interest in it. The work can be demanding but you can get through it when you enjoy what you do.
