Accounting Controls Undergraduate Review

My main task is performing Balance Sheet reconciliations for various accounts to support the product portfolio. The balance sheet is essentially comparing account balances between the 2 systems that the firm works: SAP FI & Contract Management System (CMS). Differences that arises between the 2 systems are investigated and categorise accordingly. Besides that, I perform journals to make adjustments in SAP, reformat supplier invoices, VAT related tasks. At month end, I will post accruals to reflect the expense/revenue which we have incurred/generated but which we have not issue/receive the invoices. On top of that, I collate figures for the senior controls accountant to perform month end analysis.

You are treated like one of the team, and given tasks an Assistant Controls Accountant would have, with less responsibility - but in the context of a year's placement I was pleasantly surprised with how much responsibility was given to me in a lot of tasks, while a few tasks are not hugely impactful (like most jobs). There is a fair bit of independent working, but great support is given and help is always there .

I have greatly improved my Excel Skills and have been able to apply what I have learnt in University into the real working environment. This has enabled me to strengthen my understanding and knowledge of my subject. Whilst doing this, I have also been able to learn about the intricacies of the automotive industry, i.e. the various products they offer and the life of the customer contract. Last but not least, my interpersonal skills have developed over the course of the year through collaborating with my colleagues, other departments and attending life skills session, with other undergraduates, organised by the Learning and Development department

Life-Skills sessions are ran throughout the placement that focus on lots of things like powerful presentations, email etiquette, Excel, personal brand etc. which have in truth accelerated my development, where I now feel headstrong in applying to graduate jobs in the coming year, as I feel like I have the necessary competencies to start in my desired career path, however we will see! Industry knowledge from this scheme is interesting and beneficial for automotive careers.

The company culture is simply amazing. VWFS promotes inclusivity, and prioritise employees wellbeing. There is an onsite wellbeing centre which is very useful. They provide physio treatments, health consultations to keep track of physical and mental health. The company has great benefits such as: discretionary bonus scheme, employee loan car scheme and a generous holiday policy (27 days of annual leave), and last but not least, a hybrid working environment!

I have enjoyed my placement having moved to a new area and had the independence of a full time job. My team has invested a lot of time into my development, in the contexts of industry / on the job learning, and the company provides undergraduates lots of opportunities for personal development - both crucial parts of my placement and by extension have lead to my enjoyment. This year I wanted to develop, which I have done.
