Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Working in the NHS means new things every day! On a generic basis it involves caring for women and their babies, whether that be during their pregnancy, labour or after birth. We can do all sorts of jobs from breast feeding support, phlebotomy, booking pregnancies and antenatal appointments, delivering babies and caring for labouring women and postnatal care.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. I’m my first year it was quite observational however now I am in my third year I am getting very hands on and tend to be providing most of the care, with the midwife there to support, oversea and help me where needed.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I’ve learnt massive amounts of new skills! Everything in my placement is new to me! From documenting, communication techniques and teamwork, to phlebotomy, cannulation, delivering babies and emergency responses it is all so different and new!

Lots! My placement have been amazing. All of the midwives are so caring and want you to do well. They’re brilliant!

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The nhs is very short staffed, so we face lots of staffing problems. However, overall the atmosphere is very positive and supportive.

What advice would you give to others applying to NHS
Be aware that the nhs does have very poor staffing and faces a lot of challenges. It isn’t always a positive place to work but the job is so worth it! It is truly amazing and there’s no greater reward than helping bring babies into the world and caring for women during the time of vulnerability.
