Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Seeing patients in the morning, helping out and conducting the visits. Taking blood and other required samples from the patients. Processing samples in the lab, getting them ready for storage and/or shipments. Doing admin work for each visit, making sure patients fill out all questionnaires.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
At the start it was mostly shadowing, but after a few months I was able to independently see the patients and take their samples. There was always a nurse/medic present if needed but if the patients were happy I could conduct the visit independently. On wards I was always supervised. In the lab I was completely independent and on some days was the only staff member working so had a lot of responsibility.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Learnt: Phlebotomy, speaking with patients effectively, effective liaising with colleagues and patients, how to process samples in the lab using centrifuges, how they are stored in the building, how they are audited.
Developed: Communication, email etiquette, critical thinking in situations with strict deadlines.

Very friendly culture and environment, minimal work politics and everyone seemed happy doing their job and letting me help out wherever needed.

What advice would you give to others applying to NHS
Keep an eye out for placement adverts because they can be competitive and it's better to get your application in sooner. Also be vocal at any interviews about what you expect from the role. Maybe ask for a tour of the workplace beforehand to get a better idea of how to work your application.
