Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an audit intern I have completed in depth audit work on a variety of sections such as cash, assets, turnover, expenses, payroll etc. I have also completed reviews of accounts for various clients right from my first week. The role involves a lot of working closely together and learning from everyone around you. As a part of the internship, we also spent each Friday afternoon working with other interns in the office (and other offices depending on how many interns there are- I worked with 2 other offices) on a presentation of the services provided by Evelyn to a hypothetical client.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given responsibility over entire sections of audit work as I became more experienced with my internship. This felt like a great reward from my manager as it was clear that she felt I was doing a good job and trusted my work. I was also asked by managers to speak up in meetings, particularly involving clients which helped my development and made me feel like a part of the team as opposed to just an intern.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
When I started, I didn't know anything about accounting and had no experience at all. I also had limited excel knowledge. A week or so before the internship each intern was sent a link to complete online training provided by an outside company. This was an introduction to bookkeeping course which could be done in your own time and took approximately 3 full days with 2 exams at the end. The course went in depth enough for anything you needed to know to start the job and I didn't feel too disadvantaged to the accounting university students around me. My excel skills very quickly improved as I had to complete many excel documents for all of my work and we also received some training on this.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Before I joined, I was allocated my line manager and a buddy, who was a first year at the firm. I received emails from both of these individuals before my start date and asked if I had any questions, which I did have and they answered them in good detail, making me feel better about the start of the internship. Throughout the internship, they both supported me closely and I never felt as though I didn't have someone to go talk to. The support and guidance didn't just come from these people, every single person at the firm was willing to talk and help whenever you needed, whether it was from a director or a first year.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone at the firm was friendly and was always open to talk if needed. I never felt singled out as an intern and everyone ranging across various levels was up for a joke. One selling point the firm prides itself on is its culture, which you here from every company, however, Evelyn aren't lying. This is one of their strongest points and the main reason most people I have spoken to enjoy working there. The culture of the company made me thoroughly enjoy my internship.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My internship was very enjoyable thanks to the people around me. There was never a day that I felt disappointed that I had to go into the office and going to a client site was always a nice change up from day-to-day life. The only issue with enjoyment of the internship was the work I was completing itself, however this isn't an issue relating to the company, just the job role itself. Audit work can become fairly tedious and having spoken to other people at other firms, this can be an issue everywhere, and isn't the case for everyone, some people thoroughly enjoy it.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend S&W to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to S&W
My key advice for people applying is to research the company when reaching your assessment centre- this seems to be a key area they focus on in applications. If your successful and get in, don't worry about your first day- everyone is so friendly, and you will be guided through everything. In the job, never stop asking questions and trying to learn, this is a key sign they look for in good future employees and will not only make your experience more enjoyable, but also make you stand out to managers more.
