Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I would trial new designs for cycle lanes, referring to the standard LTN1/20 and various examples. These would be drawn up on AutoCAD and put into a format that is presentable along with justifications for my design choices. Regular review meetings ensure i'm on track and are a good chance for me to receive feedback.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was responsible for organising my own time during the project, and providing outputs that are worthy of presenting.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have heavily developed my communication skills via email and teams, as well as my presentation skills. During the duration of my internship, i have become very familiar with how to use software such as AutoCAD and BIM360.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
There were regular review meetings during the project, where my progress was assessed and useful feedback was given on what I could alter for the new review meeting, and what I was doing well when it came to the design.

It was very welcoming and supportive, the focus on community was a nice atmosphere to be apart of.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I very much enjoyed my work experience, and thought it was very useful in the development of my industry related skills. This is a placement I would recommend to anyone wanting to get into Civil Engineering or Highways.

What advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald
Be honest about the skill level before entering into the role, as being honest in the interview about not having any previous experience in civil highways made the whole interview feel less stressful and set the expectations. Expanding on my hobbies and my interests (not relating to civil engineering) was key, and showed the interviewer more about who I was as a person.
