Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was a summer technology intern at M&G.
They have three offices available for the tech internship: London, Edinburgh, and Stirling.
The departments you could work in were Retails & Savings, Security, Enterprise Technology, Investment Tech, and Cloud. I was in Retail and Savings in Edinburgh.
During my internship I was in a team of 6 interns and we were tasked with creating a dashboard using Microsoft Power BI and using SQL to query data from a database into Power BI. The database already existed within the business.
With another group of interns we prepared a presentation on a business problem which we presented to senior leadership at the end of the internship.
The internship lasted 8 weeks.
We had lots of speaker sessions from people within M&G explaining how the company works and is divided.
Our working method was agile so day to day this meant meeting at a daily stand up to say what we did the previous day, working on our assigned work for that day, and going to speaker session meetings.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
We were given total responsibility on our group presentation and also our dashboard project within retail and savings.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt some basic SQL by making some basic queries. And I have learnt some basic Microsoft Power BI which I had never used before. I also learnt what it meant to work a 9 to 5 and work in an agile environment. Which means doing daily stand ups and meeting every week to reflect on the previous week of work and plan the following week of work.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received support and guidance from my manager, assistant manager, and my buddy. In general if you are proactive and asking people for advice and scheduling meetings with people you want to talk to you can get the guidance you are looking for.
How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company atmosphere was very good. People were not too formal in the Scotland offices where I worked and you could speak to most people comfortably so there was no a rigid hierarchy in terms of who you could speak or interact with. And there isn't al ultracompetitive atmosphere.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my internship a lot because I learnt a lot and I like learning new things. I now know what it feels like to work a 9 to 5 and commute. And I know what the corporate and office environment is like too. If you want to know what the standard office job version of what you study at university is like I recommend it. I learnt a lot about myself and what I want to do and also have a much better understanding on how to apply for jobs.
