Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The role involved reviewing various financial statements and other supporting documentation to ensure these give a true and fair view and are in compliance with various regulations and requirements such as IFRS, UK GAAP and ISA. Each day involved a team meeting where tasks were allocated to team members and my tasks included work on EGAs around derivatives, revenue, withholding taxation, security listings, MVD and financial instruments. It also involved using audit technologies such as Aura and Halo, as well as requesting information from clients to test for existence.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a lot of responsibility during the course of my internship. Straightaway on my first day I was completing complex tasks around withholding tax and was requesting information from the client as well as documenting the results on an EGA. I was also tasked with completing various EGAs independently and definitely did not feel like an intern with the tasks I was being allocated. This helped me to grow personally and professionally and really helped me to get the most out of this experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, my internship has helped me to gain new skills as well as consolidate existing ones.
My technology skills have improved greatly, and I now feel far more efficient and comfortable on platforms such as Microsoft Excel as well as using Google softwares such as Meets and Calendar. I have also learned how to use various new technologies such as Aura, Halo and Connect, platforms I had no prior experience of.
I also feel my communication skills have improved as I have had to communicate with many different people, both in-person and virtually. I feel more confident in asking questions and seeking advice and feedback where necessary.
Finally, I have learned many new technical skills around the area of audit and the many elements to completing one. I now understand in greater depth the various audit test and exercises that must be carried out in order to comply with regulation. I also feel able to complete some of these now.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received lots of support throughout my internship. Firstly, the HR team have been great and were always available to answer questions prior to me starting the internship.
My team was extremely supportive throughout, and everyone was happy to take time to explain things and answer my questions, particularly when I was unsure. No matter how busy my team were, they would always make time to help me and explain how to do different tasks to ensure I felt supported and was able to perform to the best of my ability.
Also, in the office, regardless of the team they are in, everyone was willing to help even with small things such as working the computers or finding a file.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The atmosphere in the office was very friendly and relaxed. Everyone was friendly and willing to help and support each other. Therefore, it was a very inclusive environment where everyone encouraged each other to succeed and become their best selves. Everyone in the office was happy to answer questions and provide assistance where necessary, even with small things. Also the free coffee (especially the oak milk machine) was a bonus and definitely helped encourage more people into the office.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend PwC to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to PwC
I would recommend applying. As someone who completed Women in Business and now the summer internship I have always had positive experiences of the firm. Ensure you research the company and your motives for applying prior to beginning the application to ensure you stand out in the recruitment process. Take time to complete each stage to allow you to complete this to the best of your ability and maximise your chances of success. Finally, for the assessment centre come prepared and research the line of service you are applying to.
