Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
During my placement year, I have spent most of my time within the UX team (10 months) where I was able to gain experience in App, Website and Research related work. For the other 2 months, my time was split working and gaining experience within the Brand team and the Marketing team.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. Even though we worked quite collaboratively on some tasks, I was also given responsibility to provide design ideas/solutions for a scenario/problem, and then create wireframes and designs related to my ideas. Regarding my time within the brand team, I was also given responsibility to respond to creative briefs and create work for any design requests. This allowed me to develop work that I can potentially include within my portfolio for future years.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Have continued to learn and gain a wealth of knowledge about UX design principles and processes, as well as gaining an understanding in digital content managing, SEO and meta data. Learned new software/tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Miro, User research platforms. Also gained more experience in other Adobe CC softwares, which was helped by working within the brand team.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Everyone at the business was very welcoming and helpful, they were always willing to answer questions and provide guidance and feedback on any work that I did. I was always made to feel part of the team and like any other employee.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Unite Students, everyone is very welcoming and will always make time for you. Along with company wide social events, the Commercial department also organised a range of socials across the year, which created an even more positive atmosphere for myself as I was able to meet a wide range of co-workers within the department.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Unite Students, and am so grateful for the opportunity and the experience I was able to gain from my year at the company. It allowed me to gain vital insights into the industry, provide great networking opportunities and develop my skill set and knowledge.

My advice would be to showcase your teamwork skills, your willingness to adapt and work collaboratively, along with your personality throughout your application process to Unite Students.
