Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Each day with Gateley legal was very well structured. Tasks were assigned at the start of the day and kept me busy for the entire working day. Some examples of work completed are cross checking collateral warranties with base warranties, drafting wills, drafting deeds of assignment, drafting an article on AI and defamation and exploring the significance of the Building Safety Act 2022. This was in addition to court visits when possible.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
This was very well explained. Routes into the industry were explained in detail by trainees and paralegals, and the application process for roles at Gateley itself was explained also. The extent of the company was made clear, with the different roles available across the company being laid out.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The acquisition of hard legal skills was invaluable. Drafting wills and reviewing warranties, drafting deeds of assignment were all things which I had never done before, nor would I have had the opportunity to do so without the placement. Likewise, my skills in document reviewing and legal analysis were improved greatly, with drafting a legal article being very useful.

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture was very positive. Everyone in the Belfast office was incredibly kind and helpful. Not once did I feel like a burden for asking questions etc. Group sessions with the wider company were very enjoyable also, and showed that Gateley's commitment to a positive working environment is more than box ticking on the company website.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I enjoyed this insight greatly. It was incredibly well structured. Each department I sat in gave me a set of tasks for the day, which kept me busy for the entire day, and I was right next to industry experts who were happy to answer any questions. Being able to speak with trainees was also invaluable as it made clear the path to becoming a trainee.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gateley
If you're thinking of applying, do it. The application process is very straightforward, being just a cover letter and CV (for the Belfast office at least). Research around the firm before applying. Think about which area of their work interests YOU and why, and state what you could bring to the firm.
