Occupational summary
Data technicians source, format and present data securely in a relevant way for analysis using basic methods; to communicate outcomes appropriate to the audience; analyse structured and unstructured data to support business outcomes; blend data from multiple sources as directed and apply legal and ethical principles when manipulating data.
Knowledge
Data Technicians will develop an understanding of data types, sources, formats, and how data is stored both on-premises and in the cloud. They will learn to access, extract, collate, and format data to industry standards, using tools to manage, present, and communicate it effectively. They will understand the value of data, how to blend and filter it, and apply basic statistical methods. They will identify common data quality issues and apply validation and corrective actions. They will communicate findings clearly, follow legal and ethical guidelines, consider audience needs, and understand the role of data in the digital world.
Skills
- Source, collect, format, and migrate data from identified sources
- Blend, manipulate, and link datasets using tools and basic statistical methods to identify trends and patterns
- Clean and audit data, apply checks to ensure accuracy, and store it securely in line with legal standards
- Communicate data clearly to different audiences
- Create consistent technical documentation
- Prioritise tasks within projects
- Review own development needs, stay updated on new technologies, and work effectively as part of a team

Entry requirements
Apprentices seeking to join the data pathway can speak to ATAC to determine which level will be most suitable for them, depending on prior experience and qualifications.
Progression routes
Successful apprentices can progress onto higher-level data apprenticeships.
Key information
- Level (At end of programme): Level 3
- Maximum Duration: 13 months
- Available Funding: £12,000 funding band maximum available through the Apprenticeship Levy. Employers that do not pay the Levy will fund 5% of the funding band maximum.
