Army Nurses provide high‑quality care to soldiers and their families in a wide range of settings. You’ll work in medical centres, field hospitals and on operations, supporting patients through routine care, recovery and urgent treatment, both in the UK and overseas.
You’ll be part of a close‑knit healthcare team, often working in fast‑moving environments where compassion, teamwork and clinical judgement really matter. It’s a role for dedicated nurses who want variety, responsibility and the chance to make a real difference, while developing leadership skills and experience beyond a traditional NHS setting.
Qualifications required
To join as an Army Nurse, you must:
- Hold a nursing degree in Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disability Nursing
- Be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Meet Army medical and fitness standards
Nurses can join at different stages of their career, including as students, newly qualified nurses or experienced professionals.
Nursing Bursary (Up to £42,000): If you already have a guaranteed university place, are applying through UCAS, or are part‑way through your nursing degree, you may be eligible for an Army Nursing Bursary to support you while you train.
What the bursary offers
- £5,000 for each year of your nursing training
- A £27,000 lump sum after completing your degree and finishing training
Once qualified, you’ll enter The Army as a Registered Nurse and be posted into a clinical role, where you’ll receive strong mentorship and support from experienced clinical practice educators.
